The Students were so Earnest?

Another school year is officially underway in the library! While it’s always a bit hectic figuring out which schools to visit first, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching our students settle in. Their dedication to getting work done is inspiring. Every day, I see study groups huddled together, sharing ideas and taking notes. How do I know? My index cards are flying off the desks! Who knew Mount Tahoma students were so earnest? Just kidding—I always knew.

Of course, engagement in the library isn’t strictly academic—and that’s a wonderful thing. Plenty of rich discourse is happening, too. Students gather in groups simply to chat about whatever is on their minds. That is precisely the point: the library is a welcoming communal space where the only cost of entry is your attention, an openness to new ideas, and mutual respect.

What better way for these young people to practice being active, thoughtful citizens? My heart truly warms whenever I see our students eager to spend their time here. As they should! The library is a sanctuary for free thinking, and that is positively thrilling. Their energy is my why, and I am beyond proud to say: the kids are alright!
